EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR PERFUME πŸ’œ

We all love perfumes ...isn't it?! When it comes to fragrance , it has the power to bring back memories as well as create new momories . we all have a special attachment towards fragrances and it definitely has the power to uplift our moods somehow ....but do you know everything about your perfume?☘
Many of you might have heard people talking about day and night perfumes ,  longevity of a perfume ...well ..."hakunamatata" i am here to clear all your doubts about perfumes 🌼
To start with lets discuss about the fragrance families ( yeah they have families) 🐀
There are mainly four families of fragrances

1. Fresh
2. Floral
3. Oriental
4. Woody

                              1.  Fresh

These are the fragrances which are refreshhing , zesty and vibrant. Citrus based fragrances are usually created with lemon , mandarin and bergamot .You might be familiar with the aqua fragrances ...they also lie in this category. Water fragrances are made with aquatic notes like sea spray . Fresh green fragrances are made of herbal and leafy scents .

                               2. Floral

One of the most popular families ! And one of the broadest too !!
As the name suggests ....Any fragrance that has a sweet and flowery scent will belong under this category . Using notes such as roses , jasmine, lilies , etc. They can range from light and delicate to more complex and intense .

                               3. Oriental

These are warm , sweet , and even a little spicy . I hope you can imagine it already !! A more luxurious fragrance family that vary from oriental , soft oriental and woody oriental . yeah!! They are a bit complicatedπŸ’Œ . The perfumes in this family are rich and sensual , often made with interesting notes if cardamom , cinamon , vanilla alongside the like of jasmine , orchid and orange blossom .

                                4. woody

Another warm family with a mysterious and captivating scent . These basically use wood based smell such as cedar wood , sandal wood, and amber . They are a great choice for wearing in the evening.
They are split into mossy wood that have an earthy sweet undertone and dry woods which have a smoky leathery smell to them.

    All about fragrance notes πŸ’›

By this time many of you might be wondering what "notes" was i talking about in the previous section !! I'll not confuse you peeps any further ...let's dig into these beautiful notes and understand them completely .
"Perfume notes are ingredients that make up a fragrance" . They are categorised as "Top notes" , " middle " or " heart" notes and " base" notes.

                           Top notes

These form the top layer of a fragrance . These are the scents that you detect first after spraying a perfume. In other words they set the first impressions , but the top notes evaporate quickly , lingering around for only 10 to 15 minutes .
Some common top notes include citrus scents like lemon , orange and light floral notes like lavender and rose . Basil is also used.

                             Heart/ Middle notes

As the name suggests they are the heart of the fragrance and are sometimes know as middle notes too . Their function is to retain some of the top notes' aroma while also introducing new scents to deepen the experience . They makes up 70 % of the total scent.  Heart notes appear, as the top notes start to fade and remain evident for the full life of fragrance . They include floral oils like jasmin, geranium , neroli as well as cinamon , lemon grass , black pepper etc.

                             Base notes

Along with middle notes , base notes form the foundation of the fragrance . Base notes are very rich , heavy, and long lasting . They kick in after about 30 minutes and work together with the middle notes to create the fragrance's scent . since base notes sink into your skin , their scent lingers the longest and can last for 6 hours or more . Popular base notes include vanilla , amber, musk , moss, sandal wood, and cedar wood .

You might have already heard the terms "eau de perfum" and " eau de toilette " .
But what do they actually mean?
Well these different fragrance types denote the strength and longevity of the prfume . Because after knowing the fragrances and selecting your favorite fragrance , the next thing you need to know is about the strength and longevity of it .

                               Perfume

It contains the highest percent of perfume extract of any product available . It contains 15% to 40% perfume essential oils. It is the easiest to identify even before reading the label , because it usually comes in heavier bottles that are equipped with ornat stoppers.
And as you can guess it is the most expensive types of product.
It is generally a product that's dabbed on certain pulse points and isn't used all over the body .

                          Eau de parfum ( EDP)

This product has the next highest concentration of essential perfume oils in it. It typically has 10% to 15% perfume essence concentration in its formulation. It means that the scent is lighter and doesn't have he longevity as perfumes . Unlike perfume, this product is difficult to be identified , only by looking at its bottle because it can come either with a stopper or spray . It is usually cheaper than perfume but still remains among the higher end but of the price spectrum . It lasts for 4 to 6 hours .

                        Eau de toilette (EDT)

This type of fragrance has a lower concentration of perfume essences in it than the above two mentioned . It contains 4% to 15% concentration of essential oils in its formulation . An extremely light formula that is often sold in spray bottles . It has a relatively higher percentage of alcohol and it lasts from 2 to 3 hours . This is the reason that it is mainly used on a daily basis during day time .

                            Eau de cologne

Cologne is a word that can be heard quite frequently . Usually when a product says that its a cologne , its an indication that it has a low concentration of fragrance elements . These are one of the most diluted perfume versions and contain 2% to 5% fragrance oil concentration in their formulations . It is an extremely light and inexpensive product , which is usually used as after shaves and splash on fragrances. This product will last for approximately 2 hours.

                          Eau fraiche

When translated to english it says "fresh water". It is the most inexpensive products available , but it has one of the lowest concentration of essential oils . Most of them contain 1% to 3% of essential oils . Since they have such a small concentration of essential oils , they are usually extremely light and dissipate within an hour or two of being sprayed on. After all its basically scented water!! that you spray on to freshen up πŸ’œ
Perfumes are a wide topic but these were some of the most essential and important things that you needed to know . I hope the next time you shop for a perfume you will exactly know what you are looking for, which is ultimately going to save you a lot more time.

A quick tip before you actually go to a fragrance store is ....do not try to smell all the perfumes available .It will disturb your olfactory receptors and after some time , all the fragrances will appear same . So as to avoid this you can make use of the coffee beans that you observe at the fragrance stores . Those are actually meant to clear the pallette so that you can smell the fragrances without any confusion. Try not to spay the fragrance on your skin for smelling it and testing it out ...instead spray it on the strip provided to you by the sales person. This is going to help you feel the fragrances and discover the notes properly .

With this i'll wrap this up . I know it had some insane terminologies but my motive was to provide all the information . i hope it was interesting enough .πŸ’›

                          Thank you ❤
